The 31 July 2016 Khanacross and
Motorkhana results
Fourteen drivers lined
up for the sixth round of the Douglas Shire Motor Sports
Association’s 2016 Championship last Sunday at the Reef and
Rainforest Track at North Mossman.
After the event was washed out two weeks ago the track was in near
perfect condition and the drivers took full advantage of the fast
track.
Cairns driver Steve Van der Brug had a near perfect day scoring
fastest times on all but one run ensuring he finished on top of the
podium. His Nissan 180 SX ran well all day despite sounding a bit
sick to begin with.
His winning time of 709 seconds was nearly twenty seconds clear of
the Nissan Micra of second placed driver Greg Erwin.
Last round winner Heath Barry was a further five seconds back in
third place, and first in the junior class.
Craig Barry and Anthony Baldwin rounded out the top five, while
Sonia Barry won the Ladies class.
New club member, Josh Yendle was the only competitor in the Junior
Motorkhana. The twelve year old showed no nerves at his first event
and quickly gained confidence behind the wheel of the junior club
car, despite hardly ever driving before.
Club president Bob Errey said that this years club championship was
very close, “So far we have had four different winners from five
rounds (one round was washed out)” he said “You don’t like to see
one driver dominate and win week after week.”
The Associations next event is a two-day khanacross on 20th and 21st
August. It is also the first round of the annual interclub challenge
against the Cairns based FNQ Motor Sport Club. Having lost the last
two years, club members have vowed to make amends for their poor
showing and are keen to do well on their home track.
