The 26th May 2013 Khanacross and
Junior Motorkhana results
After several events were washed out in April and earlier
this month, Douglas Shire Motor Sports Association members
finally blew the dust off their race cars and took to the
track last Sunday for the first khanacross and junior
motorkhana for the year at the Reef and Rainforest Track.
While some drivers may have been a little rusty from not
competing for nearly six months it was not long before they
were blowing the cobwebs out of the carbies and
kicking up some dust.
With several of the juniors having moved up to the
khanacross track this year numbers were slightly down for
the junior motorkhana.
Having already competed in 2012, Krystal Secker put the
years experience to good use winning the motorkhana on a
time of 674 seconds.
First time competitor Cassidy Pumpa showed great potential
to finish in second place on 699 seconds. Tayla North,
another first timer came home in third place on 782 seconds,
while Cairns driver Alex Russo rounded out the top four.
At the beginning of the last run, junior driving instructor,
Shane North went out in an attempt to set a quick time and
to “show the kids how to do it.” Despite setting a fast lap
he was penalised ten seconds for hitting two witches hats.
When it came time for the juniors to have their run both
Krystal and Cassidy were able to better his time and Tayla
was less than a second slower!
In the khanacross Bruce Perry was able to put the all wheel
drive traction of his Subaru Liberty to good use to power
into first place. Despite copping a twenty second penalty
for a wrong direction he was still able to finish on a time
of 747 seconds a full thirty seconds ahead of second placed
driver Bob Errey.
Bob’s time would have been better if the witch’s hats hadn’t
kept jumping out in front of his car all day
Reg Johnson was the quiet achiever of the day sneaking his
Honda into third place on 831 seconds just ahead of Greg
Skyring driving the club Falcon on 837 seconds.
Cal Johanson and Melanie Irwin debuted theirV8 powered
Fairlane that they have been building since Melanie rolled
their Daihatsu Serion late last year.
With plenty of power to burn they were certainly
entertaining to watch and once they tame the power of the
Ford V8 they could be a force to be reckoned with.
