The 22 & 23rd November 2014 Khanacross and
Junior Motorkhana results
The second and final round of the inter-club khanacross
challenge between the Douglas Shire Motor Sports Association
and the FNQ Motor Sports Club was held last weekend at the
Reef and Rainforest Track at North Mossman.
Following the first round in Mareeba three weeks ago the
Mossman club trailed 8 points to 15 in the challenge but
with the home track advantage the locals drivers were fired
up and ready to give the Cairns boys a run for their money.
Alas it was not to be so, as the local drivers were unable
to match the speed of the Cairns drivers who took out three
of the top five places plus wins in the junior, under 1600,
and 1600- 2 litre classes to claim victory 25 points to 15.
The overall winner for the weekend was Cairns driver; Graeme
Colls in his all wheel drive Subaru, who finished on a time
of 692.44 seconds
Scott Cahill and Mossman driver Greg Erwin raced neck and
neck all weekend for second place, but an off by Greg in the
second last run of the day while trailing Scott by just half
a second caused steering damage to his Nissan Micra.
Despite desperate attempts to repair the damage he was
forced to finish the day in a borrowed car eventually
finishing eleven second behind Scott.
Local driver, Bruce Perry finished a further second back in
his Subaru in fourth place.
The junior class was also a close race to the finish with
Cairns driver Riley Thompson matching Flynn Erwin’s times
through out the day. Unfortunately after Flynn’s dad had
bent the Micra he was forced to drive the Holden Nova club
car to finish the event.
Perhaps through a little inexperience in a different car
Flynn clipped the inside bank at Colt Corner on the second
last run and flipped the Nova onto its roof handing the
junior result to Riley.
Flynn was unhurt but the car was a right off. Luckily, Ian
Johnson from Century 21 Real Estate in Port Douglas was hand
to donate a new club car to the Association.
Heath Barry and Brayden Van Dyk continue to impress
finishing first and second respectively in the junior
motorkhana and look likely to progress to the longer
khanacross track next year.
Tonisha Phillips finished third while Sheere Pumpa had
trouble with the witches hats jumping out in front of her
and finished in fourth place.
The Associations final event for 2014 which will be
sponsored by Mossman Tyre Service will be on Saturday 13th
December followed by the annual Chrissy party and trophy
presentation.
