The 20 & 21 August 2016 Khanacross and Motorkhana results
The Douglas Shire Motor Sports Association welcomed seven members from the FNQ Motor Sport Club to compete in the first round of the annual inter-club challenge.
Despite over 50 mm of raining falling at the track in the days leading up to the event the track was surprisingly dry, which made for some fast lap times.
Having lost the last two years the local drivers were revved up and keen to get this years challenge off to a good start especially with gun Cairns driver Steve Van der Brug “defecting” to the Mossman team.
By the end of racing on Saturday the three top spots were held by Cairns drivers and things were not going to plan for the Mossman club.
Despite not setting any fastest times Trevor Thompson proved that you just have to be consistent as he finished on top of the time sheet in his Mitsubishi Lancer ahead of Andrew Horn and Phil Pyke.
Sunday started well for the Mossman club with Greg Erwin posting fastest times on the opening two runs while Steve Van der Brug made an uncharacteristic error going the wrong way on the first run and scoring a slowest time plus five penalty.
Phil Pyke showed the advantage of the all wheel drive posting some fast times in his Subaru WRX and winning the event ahead of Trevor Thompson.
Greg Erwin was the best-placed Mossman driver finishing third in the mighty Micra.
Andrew Horn also posted some quick times but a ten second penalty ultimately cost him the win and he finished in forth.
It was a day of what could have been for Mossman pair Craig and Heath Barry as their usually reliable Suzuki Swift suffered from electrical gremlins. Craig was forced to finish the event in the club Falcon while Heath salvaged a win in the junior class.
Kylie Portelli powered her Nissan Bluebird into first spot in the Ladies class.
New member Brodie Francis competed in the junior motorkhana and despite some nerves before his first drive was soon on the pace and putting in some good times on the motorkhana track.
Points at the end of round one are Mossman 5, Cairns 15 so our club will have some work to do at the second and final round in Mareeba in a few weeks.
This coming weekend is the 3rd round of the NQ Khanacross Series in Townsville while the clubs next event is on Sunday 11th September.
