Junior
drivers continue to impress
The Douglas Shire Motor Sport Association held a khanacross
last Sunday with junior drivers continuing to impress
filling three of the top six places.
After some overnight rain the track was very greasy early on
which tested all the drivers but as the track dried out it
gripped up well and some fast times were recorded.
While the event was won by Greg Erwin in his Nissan Micra
all eyes were on the ever improving juniors
Flynn Erwin, driving his Nissan Micra was the first placed
junior finishing a very creditable third outright and
upstaging many of the club’s older and more experienced
members.
Just two tenths of a second further back in fourth place was
the Ford Laser of another junior, Josh Coulson. After a
strong start Josh had been sitting in outright second but a
wrong direction on his sixth run saw him penalised more than
twenty seconds, dropping him down the time sheet.
Young Christopher Dwyer was a bit of a quiet achiever
finishing third junior and sixth outright in the club’s
Daewoo Cielo.
Greg Skyring won the rear wheel drive class ahead of George
Davenport and Melanie Johanson.
First time competitor Buddy King drove well to win the four
wheel drive class in his Subaru WRX beating home Richard
Teeling and Mathew Jacobsen
Being the only competitor in the junior motorkhana didn’t
stop Ashton Davenport from having fun finishing on a time of
847 seconds.
Club secretary Stacie Stephenson said that it was great to
see the juniors doing so well. “Although sometimes it can a
bit embarrassing being beaten by a fourteen year old” she
said.
The Association would like to thank Trevor White from T & C
Grader Hire who donated his time recently to grade the track
for the club.
