The 11th Aug 2013 Khanacross and
Junior Motorkhana results
Finally, a beautiful rain free race day, welcomed Douglas
Shire Motor Sport competitors to the Reef & Rainforest track
on Sunday with twenty five drivers lining up for the
Khanancross event, including new members Stephanie Byrne and
Dale Knight and five twelve and thirteen year olds ready to
race in the junior Motorkhana
With perfect conditions and the track well and truly ready,
all the drivers were very keen to get out and give it a go.
In the Khanacross event there were thrills and spills with
the first lap seeing John Kenna’s Laser suffer a blocked
carburettor. This was quickly fixed but seemed to put a jinx
on him for the rest of the day, as he was outright winner
for hitting the most cones for the day.
Bob Errey’s usually reliable Cortina suffered rear
suspension failure, forcing him to change cars for the rest
of the day.
The usual fierce but friendly rivalry between partners Brad
Rowsell and Stacey Stephensen and John Kenna and Krista
O’Dell as well as the father son duo of Dave & Matt Coulson,
was ever present. The pace was fast on the track and so were
the excuses back in the pits.
In the end the grip of Bruce Perry’s Subaru and consistent
runs paid off with outright first over all. In second place
was Dave Coulson, pipping his son Matt on the final run, who
came in third place. Matt is no longer in the junior class
and experienced firsthand a ‘senior’s moment’ on the final
leg by taking a wrong direction and dropping him from first
to third.
Krista O’Dell’s fourth place overall gave her first in the
Ladies class, with Stacie Stephensen in second place and
Hayley Kenna in third. In the juniors class it was very
competitive with Hayley Kenna in first place, just nudging
out Josh Coulson in second by .38 seconds, with Jaidyn
Farmer in an impressive third.
Competing in only his second event Christopher Dwyer led
from the front to take a convincing win in the junior
motorkhana ahead of Cassidy Pumpa and the ever-improving
Taylor North.
The results for the juniors really show how they are
increasing their driving skills and awareness of practising
these skills safely.
It was great day and many thanks to all our members,
spectators, sponsors, and most of all the organisers who
make these events happen. The Associations next event is on
1st September.
