The Douglas
Shire Motor Sports Association has taken a commanding 13
points to 7 lead in the inter-club challenge against the FNQ
Motor Sport Club, following round one last weekend.
Run at the club’s Reef and Rainforest Track at North
Mossman, the event attracted over twenty drivers from
Mossman, Cairns and the Tablelands.
Clocking fastest times on thirteen of the fifteen runs Steve
Van der Brug finished first outright in his Subaru WRX .and
picked up 5 points for the club, as well as one for first in
the Four wheel drive class.
The only person to beat Van der Brug was Mossman junior,
Heath Barry who finished second outright in his Nissan Micra.
As well as scoring 4 points for the club for second spot,
Barry also scored extra points for first in front wheel
drive and first junior.
Cairns drivers Kevin Durose and Trevor Thompson scored
valuable points for the FNQ club finishing third and fourth
respectively, while Club stalwart, Shane North rounded out
the top five.
FNQ drivers Sam Madge and Kylie Portelli won the rear wheel
drive and ladies class’s.
Club members will now head to Herberton for the second round
in September. Club President Bob Errey said that he was very
happy with the results so far. “Having never won the
challenge, so to be leading at the half way point this year
is very exciting” he said “ Our guys drove really well this
weekend against some stiff opposition, we just need to keep
the momentum going for Herberton”
