Round 3 NQ 2012 Khanacross.
The Douglas Shire Motor Sports Association hosted the 3rd
and final round of the NQ Khanacross Series last weekend.
The event which was run over two days, attracted twenty-one
drivers from as far south as Proserpine and Emerald.
Despite the track being rough in a couple of places drivers
were able to post some fast times over the weekend.
After a day and a half of racing Steven Nicol from
Townsville driving a Mitsubishi Evo was the overall winner
finishing on a time of 963 seconds, and claiming first spot
in the four-wheel drive class.
Finishing in second place and first of the two wheel drive
cars was the Ford Laser of Warren Morton on a time of 1001
seconds ahead of his son Wayne on 1027 seconds.
Kuranda competitor, Andrew Horn pushed his Toyota Corolla
hard all weekend to finish the best of the local drivers on
a time of 1037 seconds and take out fourth spot.
Cairns junior Matt Coulson drove well all weekend to finish
fifth overall in his Ford Laser beating the four wheel drive
Evo of experienced driver Geoffrey Nicole by just a quarter
of a second.
Seventh out right and first in the 1600- 2L class was the
Datsun 1600 of Cairns driver Steve Van der Brug.
Despite braking an axle in his Ford Cortina on the last run
on Saturday Mossman driver Bob Errey was able to finish
eighth outright and first in the over 2l class.
Cairns driver Dave Page now has the dubious distinction of
being the first driver to roll a car at the track twice
after putting his Mitsubishi Evo on its lid exiting treeline.
Fortunately the only thing that was hurt was his pride.
After the event the series champions were announced with
Steven Nicol winning the four wheel drive championship and
Warren Morton the two wheel drive championship.
Club members head back to the track this Sunday 19th for a
khanacross and junior motorkhana starting at 8.30 with
nominations from 7.00am.
